San Antonio, Zambales – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a ₱71.6 million flood mitigation structure in Barangay West Birit, San Antonio, Zambales. This significant infrastructure project aims to address chronic flooding issues from the Dinumagat River, which has historically caused substantial property damage and disruption in the area.

The newly constructed flood mitigation structure features a 368-meter concrete slope protection with a sheet pile foundation. The design and construction of this structure are aimed at preventing the Dinumagat River from overflowing into adjacent plains, which has been a persistent problem during heavy rains. Historically, the river’s overflow has led to extensive flooding, impacting local communities and infrastructure.

The total cost of the project amounted to ₱71.6 million. This substantial investment highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and mitigating natural disaster risks. The financial support reflects the prioritization of flood control and community protection in the region.

Maintaining Safety in Zambales

The completion of the river control structure is expected to bring numerous benefits to the residents of San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Primarily, the structure will significantly reduce the risk of the Dinumagat River overflowing into adjacent plains, thereby preventing potential flooding. This is crucial for maintaining accessibility and safety along the San Antonio-San Marcelino-San Narciso Road, a vital route for local transportation and commerce.

The new structure will also help prevent road closures and degradation, which have been common during the rainy season due to flooding. This will ensure that essential services and goods can reach rural communities without interruption, fostering economic stability and growth in the region. In the long term, the infrastructure enhancement will contribute to the overall development and resilience of the area, safeguarding both lives and properties from the adverse effects of flooding.

Improving Local Infrastructure For Community Safety

The ₱71.6 million river control structure in Barangay West Birit, San Antonio, Zambales, stands as a significant achievement for the DPWH in its ongoing efforts to improve local infrastructure and enhance community safety.

By addressing the longstanding flooding issues of the Dinumagat River, this project not only protects the residents and their properties but also ensures the continuity of essential services and economic activities in the region. The DPWH’s continued focus on infrastructure development is vital for building resilient and sustainable communities across the Philippines, reflecting the government’s commitment to mitigating the impacts of natural disasters and improving the quality of life for its citizens.
