The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has successfully completed an ₱86.8 million flood control project in Boac, Marinduque. This initiative is a crucial step in improving the flood control systems in the area, aiming to protect residents from the frequent and devastating impacts of flooding.

DPWH P86.8M Project Improves Marinduque’s Flood Control

The flood control project specifically targets Barangay Mainit in Boac, an area historically prone to severe flooding. Implemented by the DPWH Marinduque District Engineering Office, the project includes the construction of a 600-lineal meter flood control structure. The key feature of this structure is the integration of steel sheet piles, designed to prevent river overflow that often leads to damage of properties and essential infrastructure.

The project, funded under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2023, commenced early in the year and was completed on schedule. Significant milestones include the initial ground-breaking ceremony, mid-term evaluations, and the final inspection and turnover.

The new flood control structure promises to drastically reduce flood-related incidents in Barangay Mainit. Residents now experience a heightened sense of security and a marked improvement in their quality of life, especially during the typhoon season.

Local businesses and agricultural activities stand to benefit greatly from the reduced risk of flooding. The community anticipates long-term savings from decreased flood damage repairs and more stable conditions for economic activities.

DPWH Regional Office IV-B Director Gerald A. Pacanan stated, “The construction of the Mainit Flood Control Structure assures residents heightened safety from the threat of water overflow that has been affecting their livelihood and properties for many years.”

The DPWH plans to continue its infrastructure improvement initiatives in Marinduque, with upcoming projects focused on enhancing the island’s overall disaster resilience. Regular maintenance and further development of flood control systems are also part of the long-term strategy.

Heightened Safety For Filipino Residents

The P86.8 million flood control project in Barangay Mainit, Boac, Marinduque, underscores the importance of infrastructure in enhancing community resilience. With the completion of this project, residents can now look forward to a safer, more secure environment, free from the persistent threat of flooding.
