The 3-mile ash column that Mount Kanlaon released has also caused dozens of flights to be canceled. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, over 60 flights from three domestic carriers were canceled overnight, which has affected over 5,000 passengers.
The eruption has led more than 10,000 residents to evacuate from villages near the volcano. Mayor Rhummyla Nicor Mangilimutan of La Castellana, which is located at the base of the Kanlaon Volcano, reported that evacuees left behind their farm animals on Monday night.
Canlaon City Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas urged residents via a Facebook video to, “Go down to your respective evacuation centers, be vigilant, and prepare important things such as water and food.”
